After-School STEM Enrichment Franchise Teaches Real Programming Techniques through
Creation of Custom Apps
Salt Lake City, UT – (June 8, 2015) At Zaniac, kids aren’t just busy using apps on their smartphone, they are busy creating them. Zaniac is a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment franchise, where learning feels like play for students in grades K-8. Today Zaniac announced its newest STEM course, App Creation, which will be offered at campuses nationwide starting June 1, 2015.
In App Creation, fourth through eighth grade students will be able to explore the software design process by creating customized apps using App Inventor 2, a block-based, visual programming approach designed by MIT. Students will learn and use real development techniques like event handlers, timers, lists, database management, and script generation to go from concept to a functional application. Students’ apps are theirs to keep and share with friends and family via the App Inventor Gallery. To top it off, students can even become mini tech entrepreneurs by selling their newly created apps on the Google Play store.
“The essence of Zaniac is to provide a hands-on, creative learning experience that is actually fun for kids,” said Sidharth Oberoi, President and Chief Academic Officer of Zaniac. “With the addition of App Creation to Zaniac’s growing list of STEM learning programs, we hope to spark an interest in software design and programming for kids by teaching them how to create something that they already use every day.”
Zaniac currently has two campuses open in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah, in addition to Miami, Florida, and Greenwich, Connecticut. The fast-growing franchise will open additional campuses in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York later this year.
The new App Creation program is offered as a five-day camp during school breaks or as an after-school 90 minute class that meets once a week for six weeks during the rest of the year. With the low five-to-one student to instructor ratio, kids are sure to have a personalized learning experience.
In addition to App Creation, Zaniac provides a host of other STEM learning programs that get kids excited about math and science while preparing them for 21st century jobs, including Zaniac Robotics: LEGO®, Game-Based Learning: MinecraftTM, 3D Printing and Computer Programming.
